SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 10, 2018

Event Includes Austin Area Garden Clubs and Travis County Master Gardener Vegetable Specialist, Patty Leander

Austin, TX, February 1, 2018 – Spring is just around the corner!  It’s time to plant your warm-weather herbs and vegetables.  To help you get started, Travis County Master Gardener Association is sponsoring a Plant Sale and Gardening Seminar on March 10, 2018, at the Zilker Botanical Garden.  Representatives from the Travis County Master Gardener Association, Austin Herb Society, Texas Bamboo Society and Iris Society of Austin will have plants to purchase and will be available to answer your questions.  Booths will be set up on the “South Lawn” of the Zilker Botanical Garden.

The Travis County Master Gardener Association will be selling a variety of warm-weather vegetable transplants, including tomatoes, squash, peppers, cucumbers and more, to coincide with the gardening seminar – Vertical Vegetables – by Master Gardener Patty Leander. Patty will share her expertise on how vertical structures can save space, increase yields, make harvesting easier and add interest to your garden. Any vegetable that climbs, twirls, sprawls, or has vines can be grown “up.” Patty will identify varieties of beans, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, peas and even smal l melons that can be grown on a vertical support structure in addition to providing plenty of practical tips and photos for inspiration.

The Herb Society will have experts both in the booth and in the herb garden to answer questions, identify plants, and talk about growing and the uses of herbs.  Bamboo planters, jewelry, and all kinds of things constructed from bamboo will be available from the Bamboo Society.  The Iris Society will be selling 300 “mystery” irises that had been growing by the Walk of Friends in the Botanical Garden.

Both events are free and will be held at the Zilker Botanical Garden, 2220 Barton Spring Road, Austin, TX 78746. A park entrance fee is required. Fees are $2 per adult, $1 per child (ages 3-12) or seniors (age 62 & over), and $3 for non-Austin Residents. Cash or check accepted.
